Finca "El Portón" (Alhaurín de la Torre)
The Finca "El Portón", located in Calle Juan Carlos I, is the current headquarters of the Department of Culture and Education of Alhaurín de la Torre's City Council. With a large extensions of gardens, two exhibition halls, administrative offices and an open-air auditorium, is is a reference of Alhaurin cultural life, as a setting of artistic exhibitions, concerts, meetings, perfomances, etc.
It is a true lung of the village, with a great variety of plants.
It should be noted that "El Portón" was declared the best urban garden in the Province of Malaga in 2000, and has several hundred-year-old botanical specimens.
It is a place with its own history: it dates from the 19th century and its creation goes back to the properties that the ecclesiastical hierarchy received as a testament of great landowners.
After several owners, in 1984, the rich English heir Bryan Hertley Robinson bought the farm, living there until 1991, when he decided to leave the United Kingdom and South Africa. He previously announced his intention to bequeath the property to the municipality for social or cultural purposes.
The farm has 19.500 square meters. The old mansion, 435 m2, was the subject of an ambitious project of integral rehabilitation by the School - Workshop for Arts "El Portón I". It was finished at the beginning of 2011 after two years of intense work. In addition, and adjacent area of another 270 m2 was added to the west side of the building, mainly used as an exhibition gallery.
The auditorium and its grandstand, whose works began in 1995, underwent a major expansion that culminated in 2006 in a real transformation. The result was an outdoor auditorium framed in a natural space, with seating for 847 people.
Also in 2006 the temple, an open enclosure, was inaugurated. Roofed in wood with wide support beams and topped with beautiful blue glazed tiles. The whole set supported by twelve classic stone columns.
It has an allegorical mural to art, as well as a stage prepared with sound sets and lighting for all kinds of outdoor events of a social, cultural, institutional, presentations, etc.
Besides, it has hosted for many years the prolific "Corner of the poet" in one of its annex buildings and a gardening school. To the head of this project was the botanist and master gardener Antonio Romero, whose name has been joined to the square next to the house, (as a tribute, since its inauguration in 2012); adorned by a striking mural allegorical to the culture of civilizations and which hosts number of acts.
