VII MALAGA INTERNATIONAL

                       PIANO FESTIVAL

      JULY 18TH TO 26TH

                   2026

EFRAÍN GONZÁLEZ RUANO (GERMANY)

Efraín González, originally from Mexico, studied at the Mozarteum in
Salzburg, Austria, with professors Alfons Kontarsky and Rolf Plagge. In
2001, he formed a piano duo with the German pianist Christine Gerwig.
Alongside their master’s studies in solo piano performance, Christine
Gerwig and Efraín González specialized in piano duo literature at the
Mozarteum University. In addition to studying with their mentor Alfons
Kontarsky, they also worked with Rolf Plagge and, in Munich, Germany,
with Yaara Tal and Andreas Grothuysen, whose guidance had a profound
influence on their artistic identity as a duo.

The piano duo “Gerwig & González” is one of the most versatile
internationally, distinguished by the majesty and refinement of their
interpretations on both one and two pianos, as well as their complete
technical mastery, which electrifies and captivates audiences from the
very first moment on stage. Their interpretations of Spanish music
display an enigmatic virtuosity and stylistic command that critics have
compared to those of the great interpreters of Spanish piano repertoire
such as Arthur Rubinstein and Magda Tagliaferro. Coming from very
different cultural backgrounds, Gerwig and González possess diverse
instincts and talents, giving their music an energy that makes their
performances truly fascinating.

They have performed in concert halls such as the Cologne Philharmonie,
Sala Nezahualcóyotl, Teatro Degollado, and the Musical Instruments
Museum in Brussels, among others, as well as at festivals in Europe and
the Americas, including the Mozartwoche Festival in Salzburg, the
Beethovenfest in Bonn, the International Klaviersommer Festival at
Beethoven’s Birthplace in Bonn, the Redlands Bowl Summer Festival in
California, and the International Piano Festival “En Blanco y Negro” at
the National Center for the Arts in Mexico City, among others. The duo
“Gerwig & González” won the International Piano Duo Competition
“Concours Grieg” in Oslo, Norway, in 2008, and also received the special
prize for the best interpretation of a work by Edvard Grieg, awarded by
the Oslo Grieg Society and the Norwegian Academy of Music.

Gerwig & González give masterclasses and seminars for students and
teachers at conservatories and universities in Germany and Mexico. They
have been invited to serve as jury members in international competitions
and develop socio-cultural projects in countries such as Nepal, India,
Kenya, and Mexico, where they support conservatories through
masterclasses and concerts in communities far from major cities. In
Spain, Efraín González served as a jury member at the Vigo International
Competition, Martha Argerich Edition.

In Bonn, Germany, they direct an institute focused on talented children
who are winners of national and international competitions and are
emerging as some of Germany’s most outstanding young musicians. They
also give online masterclasses to talented children and young musicians
in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Switzerland, the United
States, Mexico, Spain, Austria, Greece, the United Kingdom, and the
Netherlands.
Efraín González and Christine Gerwig are married and have two children,
who are also talented pianists.
